High performance homes are in big demand. People love to buy these types of homes, because they know that a certified high performance home will have the best heating and cooling efficiency, the best ventilation, and the best electrical efficiency. Many new homes are built to high performance standards from day one, but it is possible to retrofit too.
If you want to make your home a high performance superstar, there are a few steps you can take to make positive changes to your power consumption.
The first step in transforming your home into a finely tuned electrical machine is to find a contractor who is RESNET approved. RESNET is the umbrella body that manages the HERS (Home Energy Rating System), and ensures that contractors who are performing HERS construction or upgrades are following best practices. There is a handy search function on their website, to help you find a contractor in your area.
Often, when working with an existing building, the first step in transforming your house into an energy efficient home is to get your HERS rating. This is a number, based on a variety of energy related factors, which indicates how energy efficient or otherwise your home is. It is a number that will either be above or below 100 (which is the benchmark for HERS ratings.)
If your home has a rating below 100, then that means it is more energy efficient than average, while ratings above 100 are less efficient.
Knowing where your home falls on the spectrum is important, so that your contractor can determine what changes need to be made to make your home as efficient as possible.
There are several things you can do in your existing home to make it more energy efficient, and to improve your HERS rating. Here are a few very simple changes that can make a big difference:
There are many reasons to upgrade your home and improve its HERS rating. You can inspect and improve electrical protection at the same time, you will save power, and your home will be more energy efficient and less hard on the environment.

The only trouble with holiday lighting is that while it is beautiful and fun, and it is a big part of the season, it is not exactly energy efficient.
It can be, however, and here’s how:
If your holiday lights are old-fashioned incandescent bulbs, then they are probably sucking enough power to light up a fair chunk of your block! Banish these power guzzlers, and replace them with LED lights. These light bulbs use a tiny fraction of the power of traditional lights, and they burn cooler, so they not only promote energy savings but are safer too!
Energy Star offers rebates on the purchase of approved lights. Rebates vary by area, by type of light, by brand and by store, so if you plan to take advantage of this, do some research before you make a purchase.
If all you really need to be happy is a light that glows, then why not consider one of the light projectors instead of strings of lights? These units use a tiny amount of power, are easy to install and operate, and most have a variety of setting options.
Even in the most bustling neighborhoods, it is unlikely that passersby will see your lights in the early hours of the morning. Likewise, if you leave your lights on during the day, you are going to be getting very little bang for your power buck.
If you want to have your energy savings cake and eat it, too, invest in a timer. You won’t have to wake up in the middle of the night to turn off your lights, and you’ll never forget to turn them off in the morning. Many timers are easy to install and set, and there are even some with integrated, photo-sensitive switches, which mean that they will sense when it gets light and dark, and turn lights on and off accordingly.
What many people don’t realize is that reflected light can be just as effective at making your home glow. Consider installing lighting alongside baubles, or add glinting bunting made from metallic garlands under lights to boost your lighting. While you won’t find snow in South Florida, there are other ways you can use this to your advantage.
Consider installing lighting above water features, ponds or pools to light up the water. Anything that reflects light will boost your home’s glow and help to turn it into a showpiece.
Decorating your home for the holidays is a must, and lights are a major part of that, however, with a little forethought and planning, you can have your lights, save money on energy bills, and be kinder to the planet. With all that money you are going to save on power, you can probably afford even more holiday lights!
Read MoreElectrical maintenance, whether in your home or in a commercial or industrial setting, is often a grudge purchase. It is something you would rather not be spending money on (like insurance), and you may even wonder if you couldn’t just skip it altogether.
While it may be tempting to save a little on your budget now, there are many reasons not to skip the preventive electrical maintenance on your business premises.
The electrical systems in your home or commercial building are a lot like those in your body. Even if you eat all the wrong things and follow an unhealthy lifestyle, you will still get some service out of your body. Eventually, however, things will start to go wrong, and once one thing goes wrong, everything tends to go wrong at the same time and you wind up in the emergency room.
Your electrical system is the same way. Little things like loose connections, less-than-perfect wiring and aging outlets probably won’t make themselves felt immediately, and it’s possible to go years without anything failing spectacularly. However, when things do start going wrong with electrical systems (and they will, eventually), they tend to go very wrong, and the results can be costly or even deadly.
Electrical systems all wear out over time. Parts and wiring wear out, and breakers and boards need to be upgraded to deal with increased loads. It is a small price to pay to do this regularly before issues add up than to deal with the fallout when it does become a problem. Because eventually, an electrical system that has not had proper electrical maintenance will become a problem.
A regular preventative maintenance schedule will ensure that common problems and causes of failure in electrical systems, including faulty wiring, loose connections, overloading and damaged equipment are identified and addressed before they can cause major problems.
All of those common problems can cause fires, serious injuries or even death, and they can result in losses of tens of thousands of dollars, or even more. Worse still, if you have not followed your electrical service schedule, you may find that you are legally liable for damages caused by faulty electrical systems.
When you commit to a preventative electrical maintenance program, you might be wondering what to expect. The process is actually fairly quick, easy and painless.
The company you contact to arrange a preventive maintenance visit should send out a qualified electrical technician to carry out an inspection of your electrical. They will have a checklist of items that they will inspect to ensure that everything is up to code and working correctly. Most good companies will also have some commonly-used spare parts on hand to make minor repairs. If the company that is doing the preventive maintenance visit notices something large that needs to be repaired, they will also be able to provide you with a quotation for the work that needs to be done.
The simple fact is that preventive electrical maintenance by a reputable company will cost you a fraction of what the repairs, damage or legal issues that neglecting maintenance will cost you, and it just makes sense to start maintaining your electric sooner rather than later. It’s an insurance policy for your electrical system.
If you need to set up regular electrical maintenance for your business, Static Electric can provide you with a free consultation geared towards keeping you compliant with the regulations.

While you may be excited by finishes and enchanted by fixtures, don’t forget to spend a little time considering the less visible, less sexy elements of your new home. Like the plumbing and electrical. You might not think about it as much as you do designer cabinets and glorious granite countertops, but you will be glad you took the time later on!
While we can’t give you any advice about plumbing or countertops, here is our list of important must haves for your new construction electrical:
You might not need all of those things in your new home, but if there are any that seem to be important, it’s worth talking to your electrical contractor sooner rather than later. It is always easier and cheaper to install electrical or make provision for future installation before construction is finished than to add them later.
Read MoreWhen most people think about energy conservation, they are probably not thinking about a seventy-year-old luxury resort and spa in one of the country’s most sought after tourist destinations. However, the recent recognition of Granlibakken in Lake Tahoe, California, by the US Department of Energy proves that those are exactly the sort of places that can make a difference.
In fact, with a projected reduction of over 40% in power consumption, Granlibakken is not just a flagship project for Placer County, and its first successful mPOWER funded project, it is an example for the entire country of how any building can improve energy conservation and increase energy savings.
Increasing energy savings by 40% would be difficult for most homeowners, but for a commercial building operating year round with aging infrastructure, that is almost unheard of.
The projected reduction is all thanks to smart upgrades and retrofits, among which are:
By making these changes, the facility anticipates that they will cut their power consumption by over $40,000 in 2015, bringing their annual bill down from over $100,000 per annum to just over $60,000 this year. That is a massive saving by any measure!
The Granlibakken success story is a part of a bigger, national initiative called the Better Buildings Challenge, and was financed by mPOWER, which finances energy efficient upgrades for businesses in the area upfront, which means there is no need for capital investment.
The payment plan for the $676,000 upgrade at the resort will be offset by the energy savings enjoyed by the facility, and the investment has had an added benefit in that it has created local jobs and stimulated the local economy. The project has required local businesses to supply materials and equipment as well as labor and skills to complete the massive retrofit, and that is good for a small community like Lake Tahoe, whether directly or indirectly.
Placer County is just one of the 250 organizations who have partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy to create energy efficient buildings as a part of the Better Buildings campaign, and with a commitment to improve energy efficiency by 20% across millions of square feet of building space, there will be a significant benefit over time.
Of course, we are not all looking to do hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of infrastructure upgrades to improve our energy consumption. However, under the Better Buildings Challenge and other programs, the U.S. Department of Energy does offer funding, rebates and incentives to improve energy efficiency in homes and commercial buildings.
So whether you’re looking for a residential electrical contractor to take your home partially off grid, or someone to overhaul the equipment in use at your commercial or industrial facility, it’s worth finding out what you might be eligible for. Because even if we do not win awards for saving power, the environmental and financial rewards are significant.

Read MoreYou’ve heard of smart buildings and building management systems, but you might not have heard specifically of advanced lighting controls, or about how new technologies are making it possible to automate lighting and create more energy efficient spaces.
That is exactly what many companies are doing in commercial buildings, and as an electrical contractor in South Florida, we are excited to see how these commercial lighting advances can benefit our commercial and residential electrical customers.
Lighting controls can be a simple as sensors and switches, or a much more complex system linking many different light fixtures and switches. In their simplest form, they may use day/night or photosensitive switches to manage lighting in a smaller commercial or residential building, but single fixtures or a series of many may also be routed though network bridges to digital management systems and integrated with other building management systems to allow for remote control.
That advanced technology offers so many exciting benefits, including exponential improvements in control, timing, and programming, as well as reporting and even remote control.
Essentially, as buildings have got smarter, so has the technology available to manage them, and today, the level of control over lighting and other systems can be as complex or simple as a building owner chooses. These controls are far superior on a granular level, and offer management possibilities that are as different to legacy system as, well, day and night!
Older, legacy, analog-based lighting controls were not much more flexible than the dimmer switches your parents or grandparents had in their 1970’s home. They were clunky and cumbersome, and they offered a limited range of settings and control.
Today, with the range of digital lighting controls to choose from, we can offer customers an almost infinite number of settings and a layered control system that allows for complex parameter setup.
That, in turn, can lead to greater energy efficiency in buildings, improved security and increased comfort for building occupants. Since these smart lighting systems also minimize operation time for lighting installations, they also reduce long-term maintenance costs for the buildings they are installed in.
For our commercial clients, going digital with lighting controls makes a lot of sense. The good news is that it does not have to mean a complete replacement of all of your current lighting systems. Many advanced lighting systems can be retrofitted to existing systems with minimal changes in wiring and equipment.
Customers who do choose to upgrade both their aging lighting equipment and the management system that runs them can take advantage of existing energy savings by utilizing advanced lighting equipment based on LED and other technologies to reap the maximum efficiency benefits.
Whether you choose to upgrade your lighting and your management system, or whether you retrofit your existing system now with a view to upgrading in the future, it is certainly an exciting time for lighting, and there are sure to be major leaps in management and control to come. An experienced electrical contractor in South Florida can provide all the advice and assistance you need.
